ALPACA SHOW - ALPACAPALOOZAWe went to the 2008 Alpacapalooza alpaca show and were somewhat disappointed. It had been many years since we attended this particular show.
It seems to us that the alpaca industry is not, yet shifting to the importance of producing with our alpaca fleece. There was a booth selling items from Peru and that was it. Unless we missed another building, we were sadly disappointed in what we saw. There didn't seem to be a lot of people coming to the show just to see alpacas and learn. The seminar we saw had lots of empty seats. We were looking forward to seeing all the judged fleeces, but they were still judging while we were there, so we didn't get to see any fleece at all. We did enjoy watching the suri alpacas. We only own huacaya. The suri fleece has such a beautiful sheen to it. It always amazes us that these animals with two different types of fleece are related. The barns were full of alpacas and we did wander through them to see what animals the different farms had brought. We saw some familiar names and people. We, also, saw a lot we didn't know. An alpaca halter show is interesting to step back and watch the dynamics when you aren't showing any animals. There were definitely nervous alpacas and people. There were some pleased that their animals first time in the ring went well and others that were disappointed. We decided the alpaca show was a dud for us and left after an hour and a half. We moved on to visit the new Cabelas in Lacey, Wa which, also, was a disappointment after all the rave reviews people gave us who had been there already. Maybe we were just in a weird mood. Hope everyone else enjoyed themselves at alpacapalooza and congratulations to those who took home ribbons.

The last time we attended, there were a lot more vendors. Now we know this is a halter and fleece show, but we had hoped to see what others were doing with their alpaca fleece. There was none of that.
