DRY FELTING AND WET FELTING A PILLOW

Wouldn't you like to make your own unique pillows using a combination of dry felting and wet felting? Making your own design is fun and easy.

First, where do you get ideas?

Your design ideas can come from anywhere. Try looking at clip art designs. They are usually simple designs to start with.

If you are using clip art for your own personal use, then it's generally ok for you to copy and use it. If you plan on selling the pillow, then you need to make sure you are not violating any copyrights. It's easy to just ask permission.

Photos work, too. You can make a design by using just a portion of the photo. As long as it's not recognizable from the original, you should be ok legally.

Cross stitch patterns can give you great needle felting design ideas. Same goes here. Don't copy the original pattern and try to pass it off as your own.

Start with simple designs. It will make the project go much faster.

For this type of project, we suggest a multi needle tool. That will speed up the project, also. But it can be done with a single felting needle. And you'll want that single needle to make sharper edges and for dry felting small areas.

You will need:

  • Paper
  • Permanent marker
  • Felting needle/tool
  • 14 count aida canvas
  • Alpaca fleece (or other wool of your choice)
  • Foam surface to work on
  • Design of your choice
  • Screen
  • Sponge
  • Liquid dish soap
  • Warm water

You can make a pillow front by dry felting alone. If you choose to forgo wet felting in this project, then be sure and place loose fleece behind your canvas as you are felting your project. This gives the fleece on the top something to felt into so it will not pull out of the canvas.

If you choose to wet felt the project, this process will felt the fleece to the canvas and it should hold. To be safe, you can add fleece to the back of the canvas and wet felt it too. The combination will make a strong hold that should not pull out of the canvas.

The following instructions will lead you through tracing the design, adding fleece to canvas, to wet felting and finishing the pillow front. The file is in PDF form. You must have acrobat reader to use these instructions.
