EASY EYEGLASS CASE FELT CRAFT PROJECT

felted eyeglass case

Making an eyeglass case is an easy felt craft project. So...get out your fleece and lets make a case that will keep your glasses safe!

Materials

  • One ounce of carded alpaca fleece.

  • Dish soap.

  • Warm water.

  • Washboard or other bumpy surface.

  • Screen.

  • 38 gauge felting needle or sewing machine

  • Foam pad if using felting needle.

  • Small amount of contrasting fleece (If you want to add stenciled letters)

  • Stencil template (Optional)

  • Embroidery needle.

  • Embroidery thread for blanket stitch.

  • Scissors.

  • Eyeglass pattern

    Instructions

To felt your alpaca fleece (or sheeps wool), follow this link to wet felting instructions. A full ounce of carded fiber was used to make the case in the photo.

Be sure to use enough fleece so that your dry fleece is one third to one half larger than the pattern to allow for shrinkage when felting. Make a test piece if you are unsure how much your fleece will shrink. Alpaca usually shrinks around 33%.

You must full the piece on a washboard or other bumpy surface until it is thick and fairly stiff.

Get your free eyeglass case pattern for your felt craft project. Print out the pattern.

When you have dried your flat piece of felt, pin the pattern on top and cut around the edges.

Use a stencil to add letters if you want to personalize the eyeglass case. Take a small amount of fleece and place it in the open area of the letter you want to make. Needle felt the fleece in place through the stencil.

Put the letters on one or both sides.

    Fold the felt in half.

You can sew right along the edge with a sewing machine leaving an open area one inch from the top.

Or you can use some of your carded fleece to add around the edges and needle felt for a seamless look.

    Finish the seam.

To give it a finished look, embroidery thread was used along the edge. A blanket stitch goes well with felt.

    To make a blanket stitch:

    1. Stitch the thread into the layers of felt so that it can't be seen.

    2. Push the needle out of the felt and below the edge of the eyeglass case on the outside.

    3. Bring the thread up and around the cut edge to the opposite side and push the needle in.

    4. Push the needle straight up toward the top edge and through the middle of the thread.

    5. Move the needle over however wide you want your stitches to be and push the needle straight down into the top edge and back out the outside 1/2 inch down. Reapeat steps 3-5 until you have the complete edge stitched in the blanket stitch.

Put your glasses in your new case because your felt craft project is finished! Now wasn't that easy and fun?

    finished eyeglass case

You will have a case that is durable and very soft to keep your glasses from scratching. Or make it as a gift.

You could make several flat felt pieces to have on hand and put a customers initials on a case to thank them for purchasing from you.

You could use this same felt craft project technique to make a cell phone holder. Use your imagination.
