Tried your hand at felt making and had a little disaster? Did it fall apart? Did you get left with thin spots or holes? Yes, we have made some of these mistakes, too.
Beginning felters don't quite have the feel for when felt is ready. It can frustrate new felters to work on a project only to have a finished project they have to toss because it has thin spots or holes. Well, our tip will hopefully help you avoid tossing some wet felting projects and actually be able to fix them like nothing had ever been wrong.
The great thing about owning alpacas is that you have lots of fleece to experiment with. That makes it much easier to try something and see if you can correct your mistake. If it doesn't work, start over.
The great thing about felting is that it is very forgiving. Really! A lot of people think once they have felted it and it didn't work, they must toss the item and start over.
Truth is, you can save a lot of your felt. If it fell apart, then you didn't felt it enough or take it to the fulling stage so that it would shrink and thicken up. Wool that is wet felted together (especially if it wasn't wet felted well) can be pulled apart and re-felted.
Holes can be patched, too. It's actually quite easy to save something you worked hard on and ended up with a hole or thin spot that ruins the whole project.
Watch the video below and we'll show you how to fix your precious alpaca fiber felt project by refelting an area that is thin or has a hole.
And you thought you couldn't save that wet felted project! Pretty simple, huh?
We hope this felt making tip helps you to save and correct your projects so you don't have to start all over again.
