FELTED FLOWER TUTORIAL
This felted flower tutorial combines wet felting and needle felting to produce a beautiful flower. If you already have a flat felted piece of wool, then you can just go right to the needle felting.
You will need the following supplies for this project:
- Wet felting supplies - soap, warm water, bubble wrap or washboard, screen (optional)
- 1/2 ounce of carded wool
- scissors
- felting needle
- foam pad
- dog brush or hand carders
We started this project by laying out our 1/2 ounce of wool in three layers at 14 x 11 inches. We wet felted and fulled until the wool was nice and tight. You can visit our
wet felting
page to see how this is done. This gave us plenty of flat wool for the next step.
Next, we cut circles out of our dried wool:
- one 3 inch base circle
- eight 1 1/2 inch circles
- five 1 inch circles
- one 3/4 inch circle

Then the 1 1/2 inch and the 1 inch circles need to be cut in half. These are your petals.

Use a dog brush or hand carders to loosen the fibers on the cut end of the half circles as shown in the picture below.

Start with the one and one half inch petals for the first layer and attach the first petal to the 3 inch base by needle felting the loose fibers onto the base circle as shown below:

Overlap the second petal onto the first and needle felt in place.
Continue until you have 8 petals felted along the edge of the base.

Start the second layer by placing a one and a half inch petal inside the first layer and between two of the petals on the first layer. They should be staggered.

Continue overlapping a total of 8 petals in the second layer and needling in place.

Use six one inch petals for the third layer and stagger as you did in layer two.
Use 3 one inch petals for the fourth layer.
Place the 3/4 inch circle in the center to finish and needle in place.
Your flower is finished!

The felted flower can be used as decoration on pillows, purses, or anything else you can think of. Just sew it in place. If you left just a little bit of your base sticking out from under the first layer of petals, you can attach by hand or machine sewing around here. Or you can tack it through the middle of the flower to sew it down. You could, also, use hot glue or other types of glue to attach it to other projects.
