Looking for a fun craft project for kids? A felting project is perfect. With minimal supervision, you and your child can have a blast. For this particular project we chose to make an Alpaca from some of our own alpaca wool.
Wet felting a critter is fun. You just felt the body parts and then glue or sew them together. They are very simple shapes to make and are an easy craft for kids. You can make dogs, cats, elephants, or any other type of animal just by altering the shapes a little.
Before you start, you may wish to protect a wood table top with a plastic covering. Always keep your water warm or your wool won't felt well. We warm it in the microwave between felting the different body parts. You can, also, just use hot tap water to rewarm the water in the bowl.
Materials for this kids craft:
Two Bowls of water - one cool, one warm
Raw wool - use more coarse wool vs fine
Liquid dish soap
Scissors
Ruler
Low temperature glue gun and glue stick for the gun
You will need to supervise younger children for this project. Do it with them and you'll have fun, too.
Get two bowls and add warm water and soap to one and cool water to the other bowl.
Fluff up your raw wool and dip it in the warm, soapy water. Roll the fleece between your hands to get it to felt. Shape a larger section for the body.
Rinse the felted wool out in your cool water and press dry in a towel.
Follow this procedure for each part of this craft project for kids.
Once you have created all the animals body parts by firmly felting them, you are ready to glue or sew the parts together.
We have created the video below to show you exactly how to create this felt project.
For those of you who own alpacas, you could make up some bags of coarser fleece with instructions on how to make these critters and sell the bags at fairs or on your farm. You could make up the alpacas yourself and sell the finished animal.
Or if you have a little more patience, you could make some up out of your finer fleece and give them away to prospective customers as a sample of alpaca fiber (especially to a family with small children). They will have something that will remind them of your farm. Just put a small tag with your farm name on them. Everybody loves getting a free sample of something.
This felt craft project for kids isn't just for the youngsters. You can make them with or without the kids. Either way you'll have fun and learn some basic felting.
