Sell the hair scrunchie already handmade by you or sell your yarn with the instructions included for the do-it-yourselfers. And don't forget beginners love kits. You can include yarn, instructions for the scrunchie and basic crochet stitches, and a crochet hook.
People will more easily let go of $10 - $20 for a scrunchie or other small item than $200-$300 for a sweater or cape, etc.
This scrunchie crochet pattern makes a large, fluffy scrunchie that catches the eye. They look great in medium to long hair.

We include tags with a photo of the actual animal the yarn was created from. We have a small enough herd that we label the bags on shearing day so we know exactly whose fleece we are using.
You will need to know basic crochet stitches for this free crochet pattern. Many beginners books exist to learn crochet. We use Crochet your way by Gloria Tracy and Susan Levin. The explanations are clear and include left and righthanded instructions.
We will use the following abbreviations in the pattern:
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- dc = double crochet
- ch = chain

Materials
- 3 to 4 oz of your main alpaca yarn color
- 1 oz of contrasting alpaca yarn
- 4.5mm crochet hook
- Elastic band
- plastic darning needle
- scissors
Directions
Make a slip knot on your crochet hook with the main color.

Rnd 1: Single crochet (sc) on the elastic band.
Hold the elastic band facing you with the yarn on the backside.

Pass the hook underneath the band from the front and wrap the yarn over the hook from behind the hook. Bring the hook back to the front of the band. There should be 2 loops on the hook now.
Wrap a 3rd loop on the hook by bringing the yarn over from the backside of the hook. 3 loops are on the hook now.

Draw the last loop through the other 2 loops. You should have one loop on the hook. This is the first sc.
Sc around the entire elastic band. Bunch up the stitches so your scrunchie will be fuller.
Join the last sc with the 1st sc with a sl st.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc x 2 in the same stitch.
Next stitch dc x 3.
Continue with 3 dc in each stitch around entire scrunchie.
Join with a sl st to the 3rd ch of the beginning ch.

Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc x 1 in same stitch.
Next stitch dc x 2.
Continue with 2 dc in each stitch around entire scrunchie.
Sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch.

Rnd 4: Change to contrasting color. Sc, ch 3, sc in same stitch.

Continue this pattern around the scrunchie.
Sl st the last sc to the first sc.
Clip off the yarn leaving a tail. Use a darning needle or the crochet hook to weave the ends in and finish the scrunchie.

The black and white scrunchie crochet pattern is very striking. A sc was used on the accent color for a variation of the pattern above omitting the ch 3.

You can make a smaller scrunchie by leaving out round 3.
An empty roll of toilet paper holds 2 of these scrunchies for display. You can cover the roll with contact shelf paper for a cleaner look.

This scrunchie crochet pattern is a great way to show people your yarn and what wonderful projects can be achieved with alpaca fleece. They are easy, quick to make, and leave a good impression.
